The Carnival, Apokries in Greek, is very celebrated in the islands of the North Aegean, especially in Skyros and Lesbos (in Mesotopos) where ancient traditions are still alive. If the customs diverge a little, we find the same central character: the geros (the Old Man), who represents the shepherds. Covered with animal skins, weighted with enormous bells that weigh up to 50 kg, he strikes the ground with his stick to awaken the fertile soil and launches into an evocative dance. He is accompanied by different characters in procession, with blackened or masked faces.
