Practical information : Accomodation Ionian Islands
Budget & Tips
The best plan, when you have the choice, is always to travel in June or September, when prices melt or before summer inflation (which can, in some places, vary by a factor of three...). In Corfu-City, on the other hand, prices hardly change and remain quite high, unless you negotiate in advance when booking (and if the period is off-peak). While not unique to Greece, the Airbnb platform has grown enormously, even on the most touristy islands. The competition is stiff for the traditional hotel business, as these apartments are often rented out for tourist purposes, and are therefore inexpensive and fairly well-equipped. Finally, you should be aware that many hoteliers continue to offer discounts in exchange for cash payment. We try to avoid it, but it does exist.
To be booked
It's often imperative to book a stay between July 15 and the end of August, at least in the most popular tourist areas. From one week to the next, some prices can double or even more... And, above all, there are places, especially on the coast, where you can end up with nothing!
What's very local
These are still very much a feature of the islands: you'll still find a few family-run guesthouses and, above all, domatia (rooms) in private homes. Some hosts wait with their signs as they get off the ferries. As well as offering lower rates than most hotels, this is often an opportunity to get to know people and make new acquaintances. If you're staying here, take a look around and you're sure to spot some regulars!
For food lovers
Breakfast is not the strong point of Greek gastronomy. Among the mistakes not to be made, be careful with the word "toast", which will often mean "croque-monsieur" and not "toast" for your interlocutor... On the other hand, try yoghurt drizzled with honey (artisanal if possible) or homemade jam, or have some fruit. Paradise often lies in these little details...
Smokers
After years of laxity, Greece is now beginning to enforce smoking bans in restaurants, or at least to announce them. In hotels, make sure you scrupulously respect the ban on smoking in rooms. But to the delight of smokers, many rooms have balconies (or even views, making the effort of going outside much more tolerable).
Tourist traps
You may be tempted to follow a private individual with a sign advertising a guesthouse or even a room. This isn't necessarily a bad idea, but be sure to ask for photos, the price and, above all, the distance of the accommodation before getting into a vehicle.
