ULYSSES S. GRANT HOME
This brick house was designed in 1860 by William Dennison, for a notable city. Bought in June 1865 by a small group of local Republicans, she was presented to Grant two months later. The house is typical of the Italian style. After his election to the presidency in 1868, Grant only went there from time to time. He made his last visits in 1880. In 1904 Grant children gave the house to Galena City with the assurance that the property was preserved in memory of Fire Grant and for no other purpose. However, the maintenance of the house turned out to be too expensive and the city gave in to the state of Illinois in 1931. Full restoration took place in 1955. Most of the furniture used by Grant and his family stayed in the house.
