Budget & Tips
Small budget. 20 €/day for camping or per person in a dormitory bed in a youth hostel, 50-60 € for a room in a modest hotel or a slightly rustic agriturismo.
Medium budget. €70-120/day: nice, comfortable room in a charming hotel or luxury agriturismo.
Big budget. From €120/day upwards. Large hotels are legion in the old palaces of major cities, in coastal villas...
To be booked
During the high season in summer, it is essential to book your stay well in advance, especially in Catania, Taormina, Syracuse, on the Aeolian Islands and on the island of Favignana, which are fully booked every year from June to September.
What's very local
Hotels. There are far more B&Bs than hotels in Sicily. However, the hotel offer, particularly in the luxury category with garden, swimming pool, spa, etc., remains affordable. Breakfast is generally included in the room rate. In town, where parking is available, it is generally at a charge (minimum €10 per night).
Bed and breakfast. This formula is well developed in Sicily. Generally speaking, bed & breakfasts, apartments and small houses on the beach or in town are comfortable. You'll receive a warm Sicilian welcome, and they'll go out of their way to help you organize your stay.
Rural tourism - agriturismo. Ecotourism is booming in Sicily, as in the rest of Italy. And it's particularly well suited to this agricultural island. These agritourismi (which must continue to carry out an agricultural activity in order to qualify) range from farmhouses to castles. Some even have a camping site. In addition to discovering the local gastronomy and farming traditions (olives, vines, livestock, etc.), these green and peaceful stays often include organic or sustainable farming.
Youth hostels. A wise choice for budget travelers and those who like to meet new people. These hostels, which welcome travelers from all over the world, have convivial communal areas (shared kitchen, lounge, terrace). Dormitory beds are the least expensive, but private rooms are also available, often with shared bathroom facilities.
For food lovers
Breakfasts are exceptional in Sicily. The passion for good food is reflected on the table! Especially in the agriturismi, the farmhouses converted into charming hotels, which offer all the products of the house on the buffet.
Smokers
Rooms are non-smoking in all hotels, but if you have a balcony, you'll often find an ashtray outside.
Tourist traps
But beware: "B&B" signs are everywhere, and while some are "real" B&Bs run by local people, others are more like small hotels. For a "conventional" B&B, you can visit www.bbitalia.it.
