SOLIDARITY SCULPTURE
The inhabitants of Wazemmes call it "the serpent" or "the Loch'Ness", yet the Sculpture of Solidarity, integrated into a fountain, represents… a Möbius ring! But then why this sculpture? At the end of the 80 s, Pierre Mauroy wants to rename the Place des Quatre Chemins, "the Place des Solidarités" and to mark this change he makes a call for project. It is that of the artist Slinckaert who will be detained. Entirely made of stainless steel, the sculpture consists of 3 000 pieces and weighs more than 10 tons. For the story, it was realized in Roubaix by Inoxi France! Slinckaert's favourite themes being circular movements and infinity, he did not have to look far for the inspiration for this project. And, of course, the choice took place on the Möbius ring, a mathematical symbol and symbol of the infinite chain of solidarity… what did not fail to recall President François Mitterrand when he came to inaugurate the sculpture in 1989. Unfortunately, the snake's vision took precedence over this beautiful symbolic of solidarity. Perhaps it would be necessary to upgrade this sculpture that became inseparable from its neighbourhood.
