BIRTHPLACE OF CHARLES DE GAULLE
The house where we discover the childhood of the man who was to become one of the most influential figures in French history.
Charles de Gaulle was born on November 22, 1890 in the home of his maternal grandparents. Until he was 22, he often visited the house for vacations or family reunions. A museum since 1983, classified as a historic monument and awarded the "Maison des illustres" label, the house gives the public an insight into the childhood of one of the most influential figures in French history. It was here that many of his values were forged, notably a sense of commitment and love of country. Since its renovation in 2020, the house is the only remaining example of an industrial bourgeois house in Lille, and takes us back to the late 19th century. Thanks to the restored decor, rehabilitated living rooms, furniture and numerous accessories, the tour has been redesigned to offer visitors an immersive experience at the heart of the Belle Époque. You'll learn more about Charles de Gaulle's family origins and the environment that helped shape his career. The house now welcomes over 42,000 visitors a year, and has become one of the city's must-see attractions. In addition to the historical part of the museum, there is also a temporary exhibition space. The museum also offers a walking tour of Lille, exploring Charles de Gaulle's childhood through 13 stages that strongly influenced the future general and his family.
