Museum housing a remarkable ornithology collection, as well as art and weapons from the Far East.
Since 1890, the Musée de Châteaudun, heir to the Société Dunoise d'Archéologie, has preserved a rich heritage, highlighting the town's heroic resistance during the 1870 war. Founded in 1864, the museum boasts a varied collection, from Egyptian artifacts to bird collections, as well as works of art acquired through donations, bequests and state deposits. Housed in a former schoolhouse since 1890, the museum has grown over the decades to become a regional cultural treasure trove. Regular acquisitions, including the Wahl-Offroy donation in 1971, have made it possible to offer a diversity of objects reflecting the tastes and interests of collectors and donors, providing a perspective on local history and culture.
The room dedicated to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 plunges visitors into the town's resistance through paintings, engravings and objects. The scenography highlights emblematic figures of the resistance, while military artifacts and souvenirs found in the rubble of houses bear witness to the tragedy experienced by the local population. One of the room's highlights is a bell dating from 1588, broken during the siege, embodying the town's resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The Musée de Châteaudun is a veritable journey through time, providing an insight into the history and culture of the region, while paying tribute to the resilience of its inhabitants.
