TRIBUTE FROM THE VALLEY OF RUSHES
This small framed stele of two flags - an American and a French - is located on the edge of a roundabout at the entrance to Pont-Tranchefétu. This point of remembrance is about the fall of a US aircraft flight. In May 1944, missionnée to bomb the flying airfield of Chartres occupied by the Germans, this flight was hit by the German LOAC. The crash on Chartres was avoided but the bombs were dropped in the emergency. Believing in a drop-out signal, the second group sank its bombs on the city centre causing enormous damage and many casualties. A plaque was laid, bearing the names of the American pilots killed in the incident.
