The aqueduct of Maintenon is the last stretch of the gigantic canal Louis XIV wanted to build to divert the waters from the Eure to the fountains of Versailles. The remains still visible in the department, from Pontgouin and until this crossing of the valley of the Eure give an idea of the impressive size of this construction which will finally never be put into service. The aqueduct is about 30 metres high and surges over water over 950 metres.
