THE CASTLE RAOUL
Château became a prefecture hotel under the Consulate, serving as the prefects' residence next to the old château.
In the 12th century, it was one of the most important strongholds in Aquitaine, with a keep and two wings of buildings meeting at right angles. In 1880, the Château Raoul was restored under the direction of architect Dauvergne. Today, it is the property of the Conseil Général, but its proximity to the Hôtel de la Préfecture prevents visits.
It is only occasionally open for exhibitions and for Heritage Days in September. Approach it from the rue de l'Indre, and you'll find an impressive view over the river.
