THE STATUES OF GENERAL BERTRAND

Statues by François Rude and Marochetti, representing General Bertrand, a companion of Napoleon.
General Bertrand, Napoleon's companion, is one of the town's glories, where he had his home (now a museum). Two statues of the famous general take pride of place in the town: one on Place Sainte-Hélène, by François Rude, author of the Marseillaise on the Arc de Triomphe, and the other in the courtyard of the Hôtel Bertrand - by Marochetti - which caused a scandal in its day, as a sun grazing the general's uniform didn't exactly hide an indecent part of his anatomy!
