BERTRAND MUSEUM-HOTEL
Museum exhibiting various remarkable pieces including an exceptional set of Gallo-Roman funerary steles, in Châteauroux.
The museum is located in the former hotel of General Henri-Gatien Bertrand, a large marshal of the palace and faithful companion of Napoleon. Gallo-Roman and Gallo-Roman archeology presents some remarkable pieces such as an exceptional set of 21 Gallo-Roman fungi discovered in 1908 in Saint-Ambroix (Dear). In the nineteenth-century collections, the works of Auguste Borget, friend of Balzac, who reported on his travels of the scenic sketches of India, South America and China, were present. Two works by Camille Claudel are in place today in the Bertrand Museum. The bronze bust of his brother Paul, who she donated in 1895, and one of his first great Sakuntala plasters. The two strenuous characters remained hidden for long. They are now honored but they have lost members during this period of indignity. The paintings of regional artists and in particular those of the Crozant School are well represented with the works of Madeline, Guillaumin, Fernand Maillaud and Raoul Adam. The museum also presents memories of the Napoleonic era (the St. Helena's chair, the Sabkir Saber).
