LA LANTERNE DES MORTS
Lanterns to indicate a cemetery at night, a survival of a regional Celtic tradition in Ciron.
Intended to indicate a cemetery during the night, the lanterns of the dead would be a survival of a regional Celtic tradition. There are about fifty of them left in France. The one in Ciron, one of the oldest, was erected during the 12th century, in the middle of the old cemetery and was active until the Revolution. It is located at the top of a hollow column 0.85 m in diameter and 5 m high, pierced at the top by six pointed arches and topped by a conical stone roof. The original cross was replaced in 1875 by a finial.
