VARENNES ABBEY
Visit of a former Cistercian abbey with church and abbot's lodging in Fougerolles, a stop on the way to Compostela.
Varennes Abbey in Fougerolles, steeped in history and legend, is a jewel of fascinating history. Witness to the tumult of the Wars of Religion and the Revolution, this former Cistercian abbey was also a refuge for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It even inspired George Sand to write her novel, and welcomed photographer Jenny de Vasson and her circle of artist friends. Although the abbey is now divided into private estates, the church remains open to the public, offering a glimpse of its rich history, combining religion, literature and art.
