The massive Porte de Champagne is one of the last vestiges of Levroux's fortifications, a fine example of medieval construction.
Built between 1436 and 1506, the massive Porte de Champagne is one of the last vestiges of the city's fortifications. It is the only one of the seven gates still visible. It consists of two austere towers of a highly defensive nature. Cylindrical in shape, they are pierced by loopholes.
The building is imposing. You can still see the slides that held the drawbridge arms, as well as the machicolations from which projectiles were fired at attackers. A fine example of medieval military construction.
