EDF nuclear power plant of Chinon, putting in the program animations and visits of the didactic and ludic museography.
Go behind the scenes of electricity production! Commissioned between 1981 and 1987, the Chinon power plant, actually located in Avoine, has changed the destiny of the region and plays an active role in its economic development. The power plant is one of the largest employers in the region, with 2,246 people working on a daily basis to produce electricity. It is also involved in training young people, with 73 apprentices and 40 interns. In 2021, contracts signed with local companies represented 68 million euros of investment. The French nuclear power program began in Chinon in the late 1950s with the construction of Chinon A1, a spherical reactor 47 meters high. After its final shutdown and removal of equipment, the reactor was transformed into a museum in 1986. Since then, other reactors have taken over and the "Chinon Ball", a museum of the atom, receives 2,000 visitors per year. Its objective is to help visitors understand the role and operation of a power plant. The museography, both educational and fun, is aimed at children and adults alike. It also helps visitors understand EDF's commitment to sustainable development and respect for the environment. This is a good opportunity to challenge some clichés without losing one's critical sense... Activities are regularly scheduled to enrich the visit. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, morning and evening, the Chinon ball lights up.
