PRIORESS OF SAINT-JEAN-DU-GRAIS
Priory, between the classic Tourangeau Romanesque style and the new English-inspired style, a historical monument in Azay.
Built of stone from 1163 onwards, the Saint-Jean-du-Grais priory, as it appears today, lies somewhere between the classical Touraine Romanesque style and the new English-inspired style. Enriched by successive donations from Philippe de Ramefort, Suplice, Hugues d'Amboise and many others, the priory constituted a veritable fiefdom under the Larçay and Montbazon castles, with high, medium and low justice. Disputes over the priory between the abbey of Cormery and the deanery of Saint-Martin-de-Tours irritated the Holy See. To put an end to these conflicts between regional monasteries, Pope Lucius III decided to attach Saint-Jean-du-Grais to the Holy See. From then on, the priory followed the rule of Saint Augustine, rather than that of Saint Benedict. In 1701, it was transformed into a theology professorship, part of the Tours major seminary. During the French Revolution, it was requisitioned as national property and sold to farmers. Today, visitors can explore the dormitory, the chapter house (where the monks held their chapters), a passageway used for supplies, the cellar, the refectory, the well and a hostelry built in the 15th century. Open to the public, this historic monument is nevertheless privately owned, and the association Les Amis de Saint-Jean-du-Grais has set itself the goal of a wide-ranging plan to bring the site to life and restore it.
