BRIDORE CASTLE
This castle is one of the most imposing fortresses of Southern Touraine from the 14th and 15th centuries.
A landmark of medieval French history, the château is one of the most imposing fortresses in southern Touraine, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with its high keep and defensive systems.
It is a testament to the history of military architecture, listed on January 19, 1911 thanks to its caponiers (ditch defense system).
Its keep, equipped with latrines and, in the past, sewage drains through the courtyard and into the dry moat, makes it a unique property. The château boasts one of the highest vantage points in Touraine (174 m above sea level), which explains the motto of one of its illustrious owners, Jean I le Meingre dit Boucicaut - Maréchal de France: "In altis habito" (I live in the heights).
The château is equipped with steam baths, a fridge, a 14th-century heating system and walkways known as "false braies". A 14th-century high courtyard with a keep that served as a seigneurial dwelling, and a 15th-century bailey.
Its history dates back to the Hundred Years' War, and the château has seen a succession of owners who held high office: marshals of France, governor, ambassador, grand connétable, chamberlain to four kings of France... Charles VII, Charles VIII and François I all stayed at the château.
It has been owned by the same family since 1793. In 2021, restoration work began and a new entertaining tour was devised.
