Chapel that was once a pagan place, whose water from the well in the rock would have helped to heal the eyes, decorated with frescoes.

Originally, this semi-troglodytic site was a very popular pagan place. According to popular belief, it seemed that the water from the well dug in the rock could cure the eyes when it was drawn on Saint John's day. Subsequently and at different times, the Romanesque chapel was built in the 12th, 17th and 19th centuries by Christians around the tomb of a hermit from the early Middle Ages. It is decorated with very beautiful frescoes and wall paintings.

A small chapel and troglodyte dwelling, with some art installations making it a magical experience. No spoilers though. The friendly caretaker doesn't speak English but is full of information and very willing to pass it on.
I enjoyed the cycle ride up (tough climb!), the views and the overall experience immensely.

It's a shame that the schedules of visits is limited, think of calculating your day of sightseeing in Chinon with the royal city which occupies a good part of it
