CORMERY ABBEY
A remarkable abbey in Cormery, birthplace of the lower case letter (the caroline lower case).
Founded in 791, Cormery Abbey was rebuilt and enlarged over the centuries: the porch-tower, the refectory, the cloister, the chapel of the Virgin. Then the monastery declined and the Revolution emptied it of its furniture and stones. But we will remember this place for having given birth to the lower case letter (the caroline lower case), in the middle of the 8th century, thanks to a certain Alcuin of York, deacon and cultural adviser, who imposed this writing. Hence the Alcuins association. Do not hesitate to contact it for more information.
