MAISON MAX ERNST
The painting studio and the storeroom host temporary exhibitions, conferences, concerts..
The territory is attractive for artists. Painters and musicians appreciate the mildness of Anjou... In 1955, the artists Max Ernst (1891-1976) and Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) settled in the farmhouse of Le Pin in Huismes, which they nicely named Le Pin Perdu. The couple transformed the winegrower's farm: the farmhouse and the barn became their home and their respective workshops. Today, the painting workshop and the storage room host temporary exhibitions, conferences, concerts... The first floor, with its beautiful frame, is devoted to the documentation center dedicated to the artists. Thus this space is alive all year long. And the public can visit it by appointment. For the record, Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor and poet, a major figure in 20th century art, the Dada and Surrealist movements. With his wife, the American artist Dorothea Tanning, he left the United States and joined Paris in 1952. After receiving the Grand Prix of the Venice Biennale in 1954, Max Ernst retired to Touraine where he found a peaceful life until 1968.
Max and Dorothea, lovers of nature and botany, set out to create a remarkable garden, designed and planted in 1959. Today, we can discover the greenhouse and the many species of trees that testify to the care they took in building this green space. In the wall that surrounds the garden, you can see three large academic bas-reliefs made by Max Ernst that recall his novels-collages. Other sculptures adorn this garden.
