Near the banks of the Vienne River, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Rivière houses an original 3rd century crypt, presumed to have been built by Saint Gatien of Tours. According to tradition, Saint Martin prayed there, as well as Saint Radegonde. The church now visible was built in the5th and 6th centuries. Its bell tower and its choir with flat chevet date from the 11th century. It is significant that Joan of Arc, whose standard had just been completed in the city of Chinon, went on pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-de-Rivière. Later, in the middle of the 16th century, the church of Rivière was sacked by the Huguenots, in 1562 to be precise. Restored in the 17th century, the building was cut down by about ten meters. In the 18th century, the altar was put back up in the sanctuary. The paintings of the Romanesque period that covered the interior of the church in its entirety were covered in the 19th century with paintings of biblical themes, the work of the Count of Galembert. However, frescoes from the 11th century have been restored and can also be admired. On the western side, the porch built in the XVIIth century does not lack charm. But it is mainly for its interior decoration that one comes to visit the building. The vaulted ceiling, entirely covered with ornamental paintings, is very impressive. Within the parish of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc-en-Chinonais, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Rivière hosts some masses and religious ceremonies.
