THE LANTERN
At the top of the cliff dominating the Loire is this strange building with a height of 10 m. The construction of the lantern of Rochecorbon dates back to the end of the th century. This fortress is meant to serve as a watchtower at the medieval castle of the Rocks, property of the lord of Corbon. It was the subject of fierce struggles, especially between Capétiens and Plantagenet in the th century. When the English took possession of the castle in the th century, they destroyed it in large part. Finally, the domain of Rochecorbon became, in the th century and until the Revolution, property of the Dukes of Luynes. The lantern of Rochecorbon is now the last vestige of Fortress des Roches. Once it was used to exchange light signals with the Amboise garrison; it also served as a lighthouse before the construction of the lift, when the bed of the Loire arrived at the foot of the hillside. Today its visit allows you to discover a splendid panorama on the Loire Valley.
