RABELAIS LA DEVINIÈRE MUSEUM
Museum dedicated to François Rabelais, housed in the house where the artist lived, near Seuilly Abbey.
Near Seuilly Abbey and in the heart of the vineyards, La Devinière, a 15th-century building and historic monument, is now home to the Rabelais Museum. This humanist writer, philosopher, physician, clergyman and caricaturist, among others, was born and lived here. François Rabelais was born in this "house in the fields", 7 km from Chinon, in 1483 or 1494. In Gargantua, Rabelais sets the scene for his birthplace, and the surrounding landscape becomes the epicenter of his Guerres Picrocholines. Flanked by an original dovecote-barn, it's a typical tufa stone building. The museum itself is housed in the tenant farmer's house, and offers a fascinating insight into Renaissance humanism, with a sensitive and fascinating approach to the life, work and thought of Rabelais, bard of the bon vivants. From room to room, we discover a rich iconography and numerous documents evoking the life of Rabelais and his time, and a fine collection of portraits of the writer. Period furniture adds to the magic of the place. In addition to the permanent collections, there are a number of temporary exhibitions and events. Stroll through the vegetable garden, orchard and vineyard. Don't forget to visit the magnificent troglodytic cellars. An interpretation trail from the museum to the abbey reveals the botanical side of Rabelais. A sound trail - Un paysage à l'écoute - accompanies you.
Exhibition from May to December 2024 "Gargantua le mythe" (Gargantua the myth)
