SAN MARTIN BASILICA
The Basilica of Saint-Martin is today a 19th century basilica, designed by the Touraine architect Victor Laloux.
Martin, the emblematic bishop of Tours and a miracle worker, was buried in Tours. Forty years after his death, a wooden building was built in Tours to house his tomb and part of his famous cloak. Given the success of this sanctuary, a first basilica was built in 470. It evolved over the centuries, then the collegiate church collapsed at the end of the 18th century. Today, it is a 19th century basilica designed by the Touraine architect Victor Laloux that we visit, but the crypt still houses the tomb of the saint.
