ST. MARTIN DE CORTRAT CHURCH
This is probably the strangest religious building in the region, because the gravel of graveled stone that overlooks its porch opens the door to all sorts of meanings that are lost in the light of… Some believe these are primitive scenes, revealing the lives of peasants and their beasts in stylized representations. Others see it as astrological meaning… Finally, some minds - quick to let their imagination out - read an alien message! After all, the two main characters seem engaged in a fight, waves come from their hands stretched, each opponent seems to thwart the other. Archeologists also have their versions, which will inform you of the tourist office of Châtillon. This singular tympan inspired Armelle Guégant and Daniel Daix who took Crime to the Emulation Society, a novel that forms part of the Polars of the Spoil series (Éditions de l 'Écluse, Châtillon-Coligny), skillfully mixing local history and characters at the thorny verve. Dating back to the eleventh century, the entrance door of this singular church was classified in 1923, then the entire church in 1972, at Historic Monuments.
