The first castle was raised in the eleventh century by Athon, vassal of Renard, the founder of Château-Renard. One of his descendants founded the priory of Saint-Paul and Saint-Pierre de Courtenay, the oldest architectural witness still visible. There is no more of this building than the large tower called Courtine and the ramparts of the twelfth century. The Rue des Marronniers is the bridge filled by the castle.
