ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH
A church honored by a fresco in Jargeau, with ceramics, organs and stained glass made in Tours and Chartres.
Founded in the 4th century by Saint Helena, this church was named Sainte-Croix de Gergogilium . In the mid-9th century, the Vikings destroyed all but the nave. Rebuilt in the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries, its 64 oak stalls, classified as M.H. in 1999, make for an impressive choir. Consecrated by Martin de Tours, Joan of Arc is honored by a fresco by painter Guillonnet (1952) and a ceramic (1962) by Jeanne Champillou. The 19th-century organs are no longer in working order, but are of great beauty, as are the stained-glass windows made in Tours and Chartres.
