MUNICIPAL MUSEUM LA MONNAYE
Museum featuring archaeological, paleontological and numismatic collections, as well as works by Gaston Couté.
This architectural ensemble is one of the witnesses to the cultural and historical heritage of this small town. Before it became a museum, it was a mint until the 17th century. Hence its name, but also the numismatic exhibition, bequeathed by Mr. François Quatrehomme, to whom the museum also owes its archaeological, paleontological and numismatic collections. The town of Meung is also very attached to the memory of Gaston Couté, the libertarian poet born in Beaugency who spent his childhood in Meung. This literary component is extended by a presentation of rare works by authors also linked to the town, notably Jehan de Meung - who continued Le Roman de la Rose, the first part of which is by Guillaume de Lorris, another famous author from the department - but also François Villon and, more unexpectedly, Alexandre Dumas, whose first pages of Les Trois Mousquetaires are set in the town of Meung. The works on display were acquired by the town as part of its literary heritage.
