THE CHINESE CIRCUIT
In the years 1910-1920, Montargis experienced strong Chinese immigration. While France as a whole welcomed some 4,000 Chinese students as part of the Work Study Movement, several hundred stayed in Montargis. And among them, the leading figures of the People's Republic of China, still in its infancy at the time, such as Deng Xiaoping, the most famous of Europeans (Secretary General of the Communist Party of China from 1956 to 1967 and number one in the People's Republic of China from 1978 to 1992). To ensure that this episode is remembered, signs written in both French and Chinese indicate some of the places associated with this part of the history common to both countries, particularly at the level of the current town hall. At the time, it was a college and boarding school attended by these students. In 2014, the Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, moved, came to inaugurate Deng Xiaoping Square in front of the station. Brochure at the tourist office.
