SAINT AIGNAN'S CRYPT
The Saint-Aignan crypt is a little-known gem of religious architecture.
Very well preserved, the crypt of Saint-Aignan is one of the most beautiful illustrations of the renewal of religious architecture in the year 1000. The entrance is on the south side of the present church, and opens onto a gently sloping corridor that leads to a monument little known, even to the people of Orléans themselves. It is the only vestige of the original church built by Robert the Pious in the 11th century, in order to deposit the relics of Saint Aignan. Consecrated in 1029, the crypt is actually an underground church, where the martyrium holds the relics of the saint.
