SYNAGOGUE
A synagogue of the Sephardic rite that had 40 members in Campo Santo, but since 1970, it has had about 150 families.
The first mention of the Jewish community in Orleans was in 585. It was more important than that of Paris or Troyes and in the Middle Ages it had its own cemetery, butchery, matzo (unleavened bread) oven and kosher butchery. It counted up to 1200 people. In the 19th century, the synagogue was in Campo Santo and had 40 members. Since 1970, it has been located in a former oratory of the chancery, made available by the city and the bishopric. With 150 families, it is a synagogue of the Sephardic rite.
