BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF HOPE
The Basilica of Mézières, a flamboyant Gothic masterpiece, is arguably one of the finest religious buildings in the department. Its construction began on April 1, 1499, to complete approximately a century later - in 1615. This building was designed to replace the old Romanesque church, which became too small. The tower and the portal, later, are in Renaissance style. The exterior architecture, very sober, is adorned with pinnacles and gargoyles as well as sculptures to the north and south gates. The interior is also striking by its sobriety: ., capitals. and., high rise of the nave accentuated by its narrow height (18 m high). The Basilica of Mézières experienced its hours of glory by welcoming, in 1570, the marriage of Charles IX, King of France, with Elisabeth d'Austria, a little niece of Charles Quint. Its interior contains a contemporary jewel: 1 000 m ² of sublime windows dedicated to the Virgin, signed René Dürrbach (1954-1979), collaborator and friend of Picasso. An indispensable visit!
