ABBAYE NOTRE-DAME DE CHÉHÉRY
Visit to discover a Cistercian abbey, founded in the 12th century, with a remarkable cloister in Châtel-Chéchery.
The Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame de Chéhéry was founded in the 12th century. Ruined following the numerous lootings of the Hundred Years' Wars and the Religion Wars, it was completely rebuilt in the 13th century by the architect Nicolas Joseph in a pure classical style, typical of the region, made of bricks and ashlars with a slate roof. Following the destruction of the two wings of the cloister at the end of the 19th century to make it a pleasure residence, only the former 18th century cloister and two wings and outbuildings remain from the original building, which have retained their former lustre and 18th century decoration.
