A top spot behind history, it is here that Napoleon III tried, on 2 September 1870, to obtain less rigorous conditions of capitulation from Chancellor Bismarck. The Chancellor asked him to join with him the Prussian king at the Bellevue Castle. It is in this place that the chief generals of both sides sign an hour later the act of surrender of the French army, in the presence of the two sovereigns.
