THE COLOR MILL
Color mill located in Ecordal, the last one in France, where red ochre, ivory black and charon blue are made.
The Moulin mill is France's last colour mill. Behind the walls of the brick factory, founded in 1866, these pigments are manufactured: red ochre, ivory black, the blue charon… For nearly 150 years, the techniques used to manufacture these natural pigments have remained the same: the land of Siena, for example, extracted from the quarries of pre-ardenes ridges is dried, trimmed and crushed in the form of a powder thinner than flour. After 700 hours spent in an oven at ° C, this land heavily loaded with iron oxide, becomes red. Variations in temperature and use of special land make it possible to reveal a variety of colours. In the past, the waters of the Foivre still the wheel of this atypical mill. In the workshops, alchemists still make 45 natural pigments from nine kinds of land, some of which come from Madras! All for a prestigious clientele such as Dior, St. Lawrence and remarkable achievements such as the renovation of the Château de Versailles or the realization of the frescoes of Villa Cute in Reims.
