CHARLEMONT FORT
Fort with a unique view on the Meuse valley, housing a powder magazine, an artillery casemate and 2 bastions of the century
On April 6, 1555, the great Charles V bought the seigneury of Agimont-Givet and, to perfect his defense, he built on the left bank of Givet, the fort that was named in homage to Charles V.
It is the only example in the north of France of the military art of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its construction would have required 3 000 workers, 20 000 infantrymen and 3 000 horsemen. Its point, in the east, offers a unique and magnificent view on the valley of the Meuse. You can observe the powder magazine, the artillery casemate and the two bastions of the 16th century.
