A fortified city under Louis XIV, Givet opened on six doors, all equipped with a drawbridge and near which a bodyguard was located, housing a soldier in charge of the watch. Today, there are only three: the Porte de France on the RN 51, the Porte Gate near the wharf of Rancennes and the Charbonnière gate at the end of the Dervaux wharf. The Porte de France thus protected, once, access to the city, to the south, on the left bank of the Meuse.
