THE CASTLE OF YESTERDAYGES
The ruins of this castle are well preserved and surrounded by beautiful gardens
The charming village of Hierges nestles at the foot of a castle whose first fortifications date back to 840. Originally named the Château de Jérusalem, it was built in one night by the fairy Mélusine, according to legend, and had 365 windows... Destroyed in the 16th century, then again in 1555, this ensemble is a remarkable example of Mosan Renaissance architecture. The ruins are well-preserved, surrounded by magnificent gardens, and thanks to guided tours, you'll have no trouble getting to grips with the building's incredible history. Its defensive role put it in jeopardy many times, and it was even the subject of a battle between Charles V and Francis I. Between intrigue and power struggles, Hierges is a site not to be missed!
