THE FIELD OF AYVELLES
An estate steeped in history, hosting tours organized by the Association du Fort et de la Batterie des Ayvelles.
The Domaine des Ayvelles is a must-see. The site opened its doors to the public thanks to the Association du Fort et de la Batterie des Ayvelles. The fort is steeped in history. Isolated on the front line by the withdrawal of French troops, it was designed to hold an 11 km front on its own. But in August 1914, it was the scene of a tragic episode in the conflict: Governor Lévi-Alvarès decided to evacuate his garrison. The artillery was put out of action and supplies were doused with petrol. The garrison set off for Bouzilcourt on August 25, 1914. On his way to army headquarters at Chémery, the governor received orders to return to the fort and set off on his march. But the Germans were preparing to bombard the fort, and opened fire on the 26th. The fort has been so well restored that it's easy to visualize the events that must have taken place. What's more, the estate boasts a huge park where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll after your visit to the fort. 3 km of trails are available (sulky hire, 15 min, from 6 years). Educational trail and costume rental. A superb visit.
