HOUSE OF SLATE
Museum recalling the past of slate quarrying strongly rooted in the region
This museum, inaugurated in 1997, recalls the region's long history of slate quarrying. Let's go back in time: in 1158, the lords of Montcornet granted permission to collect slate. The business quickly took off. In 1779, Jean-Louis Rousseau opened the Grande Fosse and industrialized the Grande Ardoisière. Rimogne and the surrounding area lived for many years thanks to this exploitation. With the advent of the railroads, the industry expanded. In 1914, the company employed some 600 workers. It was not until the Second World War that the industry found itself in difficulty. The Maison de l'Ardoise has taken up residence in the buildings adjoining the famous Grande Fosse. Here, you can relive some of the region's past and enjoy the Chevalement park and belvedere.
