SEDAN FORTRESS
Europe's largest fortified castle, with tours, a falconry show and free-flying birds of prey
Built in 1424, Sedan Castle is the largest castle in Europe in terms of surface area, 35,000 m² spread over 7 levels, with ramparts of 30 m, thus being able to house nearly 4,000 men. Built on a rocky spur on the Ardennes plateau, dominating the Meuse meander, the castle occupies a strategic position on the eastern French border. At the cutting edge of progress, and a forerunner of the bastions built and designed by Vauban a century later, it is one of the links in an impressive chain of fortifications stretching from Dunkirk to Metz. The bastions that make it up occupy no less than 20,000 m², and its history is rich in devastation and conflict. Its redevelopment provides a better understanding of the stages it had to go through, with more lively elements such as its "Historium", a dynamic circuit retracing the different episodes of its long existence. The discovery of the place is done in particular by the circuit of animated visit of scenes of life reconstituted as they could be in the time of the knights. Themed tours take place throughout the year, and in summer, a falconry show offers demonstrations of birds of prey in free flight. Don't miss the nightly torchlight tours, the feasts in the courtyard and the horse-drawn carriage rides to transport you back to the Middle Ages! Make sure you have good shoes: the steps are of irregular size. A visit and activities that will please everyone.
