RUINS OF THE CASTLE OF CASSINE
On the road to Vendresse, in front of the church, some ruins lie in the distance, in a caring vegetation. There was the castle of La Cassine, built in 1571 by Louis de Gonzague, Duke of Rethel and Nevers and Henriette de Kleve, and twice destroyed. Only the cloister and the old dormitory of the Couvent convent have been Preserved. This convent, the masterpiece of fine architecture, was built "on a volée" of the castle. With a beautiful curved wooden structure, it will partly be destroyed by a fire in 1697. The monks driven to the Revolution, the estate is turned into a farm; until 1820 when it was purchased by Jean-Nicolas Constable, master of the Forges in Vrigne-aux-Bois and owner of the Vendresse furnace. Her daughter, Adelaide Truck, built in 1850 a new castle that she lived forty years ago. Destroyed again by a fire in 1927, the ruined castle, the convent and the adjoining lands then became the property of the Thibert family. But the whole is still very beautiful and hosts music festival and shows. In fact, the cultural association of the Château de la Cassine presents every summer, in July and August, a new show of its light and light, a true historical fresco every time inspired by cottage history. Comfortably located in a gallery with 1 700 seats and mobile on 300 metres, you will be transported through the scenes for an unforgettable evening. Peasant markets also take place on the site.
