THE ROMAN CAMP OF MONT-VIREUX
A site with remains of fortifications, a viewpoint overlooking the Virion valley and a picnic area
Dominating the valley of the Meuse, this mount was strategically important that the Romans, including the Chancelait Empire in the third century, consider strengthening it. The site will be regularly occupied until the fourteenth century, and there are vestiges of fortifications of the previous century and elements of domestic architecture, such as a bread kiln. Excavations have emerged, in more distant periods, weapons and currencies. From a point of view, we can observe the anticlinal of Mount Vireux, an impressive fold by its size, formed 65 million years ago. This site offers another point of interest: the point of view dominating the valley of the Enveloped. On-site, you can take a walk of one hour, follow the interpretive trail, consult the orientation table and the seven explanatory desks, not without a picnic break on the area assigned to it, in an extraordinary setting.
