It is the great annual spring and popular festivity that takes place over a weekend in April. The Soufflaculs take the inhabitants of Nontron down the streets wearing nightgowns and white hats that run with gussets in their hands to thwart farts... First thesis. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. It is probably a satirical joke in which the people dressed in masks and disguises and thus broached the elders, priests and monks. The procession took place during the period before the Lenten fast. The bellows were intended to exorcise demons hiding under women's skirts.... Second thesis. This tradition would be a disrespectful parody of the exorcist zeal of the Fathers of the convent of Saint-Sauveur. To drive the evil spirit out of the corners where they suspected hiding, the "Good Fathers", dressed in white and equipped with gussets, followed each other in procession, blowing energetically in all places likely to shelter demons. It's no surprise that foreigners come every year to discover the mystery of this Nontron tradition.
