THE DISTRICTS: LA MADELEINE, THE JEWISH DISTRICT, THE CITY AND SAINT-NIZIER
The city of Troyes, beyond its bare cap on each plan, divides into more or less identifiable neighborhoods:
The Madeleine district: within the Bouchon, this neighborhood was linked to the prosperity of the merchants and artisans of the city. The families living around the Church of Sainte-Madeleine were wealthy traders (drapiers, financiers, tanners, etc.). After the fire of 1524, it was necessary to rebuild, in stone, to avoid further losses. Beautiful hotels such as the Hotel Deheurle, all tiles and bricks in front; the sites that remain today and testify to the prosperity of the city. A narrow alleyway allows you to enter the church of La Madeleine, which contains a beautiful jewel.
The neighborhood of the City: it is located on the fortified part of the city (ramparts built in the third century to protect the city of Germanic invasions). This protection led to the concentration of "important" buildings in this neighborhood crossed by the Rue de la Cité. Thus, you will pass in front of the cathedral whose screw was completely redone in 2017, the old Episcopal Palace (now the Museum of Modern Art), hospice, former Saint-Loup abbey (and its museum), the Petit Louvre…
The former Jewish Quarter: as in every medieval city, a Jewish quarter existed in Troyes. The Jewish community was consistent and respected, because the famous philosopher Rachi de Troyes, and the synagogue of 5 Brunneval Street, is an example of this. The Rachi Institute has undergone renovation this year. In this neighborhood, we love the rue de la Monnaie, finally renovated, and at number 16 of the Paon Alley, the magnificent Black Sisters Hotel.
The Saint-Nizier district: This former "low" neighborhood behind the cathedral brings together (see Kléber Street) some magnificent residences of wood, both of the oldest and most renovated, including the Maison du Dauphin and the Hôtel des Grisettes.
