The city originally owned a dungeon, demolished in 1830. Today, you will observe this xiiith century door located on the rue des Récollets, along the walls of the walls of the old castles of the city. From this door, we can see the remains of the ancient Cordeliers convent, built in 1286 by Jean I, said the blind, lord of Châteauvillain and companion of crusade in Saint-Louis. The cloister and church were accessed through a monumental staircase thanks to this clay door. We can still imagine the extent of the convent: we could receive up to 3,000 people. It is one of the vestiges of the importance of Châteauvillain, and it was also equipped with many valuables, including a beautiful golden cross. Unfortunately, religious wars damaged much of the site in 1562 and 1567, but the Cordeliers remained on site until 1635. The church and part of the convent were eventually destroyed between 1793 and 1795. A nice place to make a couple of couple photos…
