WASHING
Lavoir (washhouse) in ruelle de la Fontaine, featuring a recently restored floating parquet floor
Built during the French Revolution and then modernized in 1828, the washhouse in ruelle de la Fontaine is unique in that it is equipped with a floating parquet floor that was restored a few years ago. Thanks to this ingenious system, the washerwomen of Castelvilliers could adjust the height of the wooden floor on which they washed their linen. Designed to reduce worker fatigue, this gear-driven system is rare in France. This is an example of a washhouse designed to be used whatever the water level in the river.
