THE RAMPARTS OF LANGRES
A walk to discover the impressive 475 m-high walls, the real treasures of the citadel.
The fortified system at Langres (475 m above sea level, 4 km of ramparts) is one of the best preserved. Built after the 1870 war by General Séré de Rivières, it comprises a belt of detached forts and second-line entrenched camps. More than forty works make up this system, with forts such as Montlandon, Cognelot, Peigney and Bonnelle, each with a defined strategic role. Some forts are open to visitors, while others remain closed or have been converted. A parking lot and elevator provide easy access to the town center.
