ABBEY CHURCH OF ST. PIERRE AND ST. PAUL
Centuries were needed to shape this imposing abbey. Montier-en-Der owes its name (from the Latin monasterium in Dervo) to the monastery built here by Benedictins in 672. At the end of the tenth century, there are already nothing left of primitive buildings; Father Adson began building a church dedicated in 998. What strikes as soon as you enter the Romanesque nef is its whiteness which, combined with silence, gives a sense of purity. It is the oldest church dating from the tenth century in France. In total contrast, Max Ingrand stained windows color the Gothic choir. Modern, 52 of them were created by master Louis-René Petit. They illustrate several scenes of the gospels and are interesting for their semi-figurative appearance. The wooden roof that overcomes this impressive building dates from the sixteenth century. A lapidary museum was installed in the lateral neves. The abbey will continue with two very original stone benches. The two sacraments were born in the xivth century. The Saint-Berchaire chapel, located between the sacraments and the choir, dates back to the XIV century as well. You can enjoy an audio guide to visit it.
